Popstar finished up Chapter 5 of her Beyond Five in a Row book, Homer Price in January.
(Please note: This post contains lessons from the Beyond Five in a Row Volume 1 manual and activities added by me.)
In Chapter 5, “Nothing New Under the Sun (Hardly)”, it is a quiet day in Centerburg. The county fair is over and election time is coming up. Homer goes to Uncle Ulysses’ restaurant to help him out. A very peculiar stranger comes in. They say he reminds them of “Rip Van Winkle”. They finally figure out what the stranger is up to, he has invented a way to get rid of mice and the entire town gets in on the plan.
We spent 3 school days on this chapter.
Day One: Popstar read the chapter and answered the Writing/Discussion Questions in her notebook. Then, I had her read over the History/Geography Lesson on Political Parties. It is a very long lesson and goes into detail about the history of the different political parties.
Day Two: She read over the Bible lessons, which talked about caring for strangers. After that, we went over the two Language lessons. The first one we talked about Famous Sayings, the one in the story was “blue plate special” from his uncle’s café. I also told her about how I remember Kmart having their “blue light specials” when I was younger. It was always exciting to hear them come over the loud speaker and announce a new special that would only be for a certain amount of time then everyone would rush to that department to see exactly what the deal was. Seems like those days are gone now and it was fun to reminisce.
The other Language lesson was about the classic story of Rip Van Winkle. We read over the lesson in the manual about it and also looked it up on the internet. We talked about how the stranger in town was similar to the Rip Van Winkle character.
After we finished the Language lessons, we covered the Human Relations lesson on Making a Good Appearance. We talked about how the stranger that had come into town looked very peculiar, he had long hair and a beard as well as wearing old worn out clothes. Then we talked about how we should always be aware of our appearance and how on different occasions we dress differently.
Day Three: On our last day, we worked on the Career Paths lesson on Law Enforcement. This chapter talks about the Sheriff of the town and so we talked about how the Police Department works. We read over the lesson and then I gave her some questions about Police Officers to look up and answer. I really wanted to have a real Police Officer talk with us, but the timing just didn’t work out.
To finish up Chapter 5, we went over the Human Relations lesson on Making People Feel Comfortable. The stranger who comes to town in the chapter has no friends and looks different from everyone else. People in the town don’t really try to make him feel welcome. So we talked about how it feels when we are in that situation. Popstar is very shy by nature, so this is something we’ve discussed many times over the years. It was a good lesson to reinforce that with her.
That finished up Chapter 5 of Homer Price for us. I’m sorry I didn’t have very many photos to share, most of this chapter for us was reading information and discussion so I tried to share with you what all we did.
We’re moving onto the last Chapter of this book, then we’ll be starting a new one soon!
