One thing we did in addition to the bath remodel at our rental house was to paint the dark wood paneling in the kitchen. We lived in this house for almost 10 years and I always said that it was way too dark in the kitchen. The cabinets are a dark brown color and the walls were dark green paneling.
So when we were working on fixing the place up for new renters, we decided to go ahead and paint the paneling to brighten up the kitchen. It really wasn’t as hard as I always thought it would be and it turned out really nice! It literally made it look like an entirely different room. (Please don’t mind the mess in a few of the pictures!)
Here is a picture from before we started:
To start with, we wiped down the walls and removed any nails and tried to clean them up as best as we could. We used Kilz Latex Primer/Sealer/Stainblocker and started the first layer.
We filled in the grooves in the paneling with extra first then went over the wall completely with the first layer. It was a little hard to look at with all the stripes!
Here’s what it looked like after the first complete layer:
After the first layer dried, we applied the second coat. We just used plain white, but you could add another layer with a different color if you wanted to. Here is what it looked like when we were done:
We were amazed at how easy this was to do and how nice it turned out! The Kilz paint wasn’t even super expensive either. It can really give a room a totally new look!
What projects are you working on around your house? I’d love to hear from you! Also if you have any advice on painting wood paneling please feel free to comment!
