Popstar finished up The Boxcar Children as her first Beyond Five in a Row book back in September. I let her have one week in between starting her next book to work on a few end of book “Projects”. It was a nice break for her after working so hard on this book and she enjoyed the extra projects I gave her to do. Here is a little of what we did that week.

The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner is an excellent book for kids to read. It is about a family of 4 children who have lost their parents and end up living in an old abandoned boxcar. The book is all about their adventures to survive and eventually be reunited with their only living family, their grandfather.

The first extra project I had Popstar do was a Book Report. She basically just filled out this form I found for her:

After that, she used the Five in a Row Cookbook and made the recipe for Brown Cookies to go along with the book.  She loves baking and they turned out really good!

The last thing we did to end our time with The Boxcar Children was to make a Diorama to go along with the book. We created the area where the children lived in the boxcar. She even used a few of her Lego Friends figurines to be the children. It was so much fun for me to work with her on it, as I am a crafter at heart! Here are a few pictures of the finished product:

So that finished up our time with The Boxcar Children! I think I may be enjoying Beyond Five in a Row a little bit more than she is! She is moving onto her next Beyond book, which will be Homer Price by Robert McCloskey.
