Popstar finished up Chapter 3 in The Boxcar Children for Beyond Five in a Row for school. She actually finished it over a week ago, but I’m a little slow getting this done! Chapter 3 is called “A New Home in the Woods” and in this chapter, the children find an old abandoned boxcar. They use it just to hide out from a storm at first, but after the storm is over they realize how nice it is and decide to move in. They also find some blueberry bushes nearby and go blueberry picking.

We spent three school days on Chapter 3.

(Please note: this post contains lessons from the FIAR manual AND activities that were added by me.)

Day One: Popstar read the chapter and did the Writing/Discussion questions in her notebook. The we moved onto the History & Geography lesson on the history of the Railroad. We looked it up online and read about how the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads united in 1862-1869. We decided to draw on a US Map the route each railroad company took to build tracks.

Then we added this event to our Timeline Notebook.

Next we learned about different types of shelter and Popstar drew her dreamhouse!

Day Two: In this chapter, the children pick blueberries. This went along so well with Princess’s Blueberries For Sal unit and with it being blueberry season! We talked about blueberry plants and looked at the US map and labeled the states where most blueberries grow. We’re very excited that South Carolina is a blueberry state!

We talked about the different kinds of soil and even did a soil test in our backyard. We got this Soil Test Kit from Amazon and tested for pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash.

I was so excited that we could tie in the blueberries with Princess’s Blueberries For Sal study and went to pick blueberries at our neighbors farm! It was a lot of fun.

Day Three: The last things we did were the Language Lessons. We did vocabulary and learning to use descriptive words in stories. We practiced writing using lots of adjectives and other descriptive words.

This chapter had a lot of very interesting and fun lessons and activities! We’re moving onto Chapter 4!

Blessings,

Amy
